Individuals from all engineering disciplines were brought together on April 4, for the first Engineering Technology Banquet sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Technology Chapter. Hosted at the University Hilton Hotel, students, alumni, faculty, staff, industry recruiters and sponsors took part in an evening of exploration and excitement.

"The students in ASME work hard throughout the year, and this banquet is a great way to get everyone together in an enjoyable environment. It’s great that we are able to show the alumni and industry sponsors just what type of great things we’ve been doing and why we need their support to continue," said Tanja Brestovac, UH ASME Technology Chapter president.

In addition to the banquet’s beautiful décor, students had the opportunity to showcase their Capstone projects. Guests viewed outstanding creations including a high fuel efficiency vehicle and a VTOL aircraft. Hard work did not go unnoticed, as the ASME also distributed a number of well-deserved student scholarships.

Keynote speaker, Steve Andrews, energy consultant and co-founder of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil & Gas-USA, intrigued the audience by delivering a timely reflection on the status of the peak oil debate. Recruiters and UH alumni also took the stand and spoke highly of the work mechanical engineering technology graduates are contributing to the workforce and reinforced the importance of continuing to expand the UH network.

Within the University of Houston, ASME provides its engineering technology students with a setting for collaborative learning outside of the classroom. The organization provides a chance for students to apply what they have learned through competitions and hands-on applications.
