Congratulations to Crystle Stewart, former consumer science and merchandising student, who was recently named Miss USA 2008. She will represent the United States at the 2008 Miss Universe pageant.
Construction management major, Xochiti Baez, computer engineering technology major, Justin Loop, and computer engineering technology major, Bao Quach have been awarded Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) positions for the summer 2008 semester. The Office of Undergraduate Research will award each a $2800 stipend for their participation in the 10-week research experience.
Neill Whiteley, senior MET major won first place in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Old Guard Technical Web Page Competition at the ASME District E Student Professional Development Conference held at Louisiana Tech University.
Carlos Gramajo, MET major, was elected by a number of student representatives to serve as their delegate to the national ASME Student Operating Board. He was elected for a term of two years, and will represent District E, which includes Texas A&M, University of Texas, LSU, Oral Roberts, Le Tourneau, and Rice University among others.
Cain Pacheco, junior MET major, is the recipient of the 2008 Hugh Scott Cameron Award presented by the South Texas Section of ASME in recognition of superior personal characteristics and scholarly achievements.

Halliburton has awarded the UH College of Technology a software grant valued at $13.1 million. The donation will be used to further student advancement in the mechanical engineering technology program and for other academic endeavors associated with the college’s development of the Petroleum Technology Initiative. The software grant is by far the largest software donation to date.

The UH College of Technology made a lasting impression at the American Society for Engineering Education’s Gulf Southwest Annual Conference when its student teams gave exceptional presentations of their senior research projects-- ultimately leading them to become the first and second place winners of the Student Paper Competition. This was the first time that senior project students in the computer engineering technology program competed in this event.

Sang-Hoon (Shawn) Lee, assistant professor of construction management in the Department of Engineering Technology, is the proud recipient of the University Teaching Award for Teaching Excellence (Tenure/Tenure Track). Each year this award is bestowed to a select group of four instructors that have been nominated by their colleagues for their outstanding contribution to the classroom.

On April 15, the College of Technology launched its Petroleum Industry Experts Lecture Series by hosting a luncheon at the M.D. Anderson Library’s Elizabeth D. Rockwell Pavilion. Approximately 100 people attended the event which featured a lecture on the Digital Oilfield as presented by Dr. David Archer, vice president of Petris Technology, Inc. and former president and CEO of the Petrotechnical Open Standards Consortium.

Individuals from all engineering disciplines were brought together on April 4, for the first Engineering Technology Banquet sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Technology Chapter. Hosted at the University Hilton Hotel, students, alumni, faculty, staff, industry recruiters and sponsors took part in an evening of exploration and excitement.

Every year the College of Technology recognizes outstanding faculty and staff selected by the Dean’s Advisory Committed with awards. Faculty members are judged by a committee of peers and given awards in the areas of teaching, research, and service. In addition, awards are given to staff members that excel in the workplace.
