Sang-Hoon (Shawn) Lee, assistant professor of construction management in the Department of Engineering Technology, is the proud recipient of the University Teaching Award for Teaching Excellence (Tenure/Tenure Track). Each year this award is bestowed to a select group of four instructors that have been nominated by their colleagues for their outstanding contribution to the classroom. "Dr. Lee is a dynamic and powerful lecturer who possesses the gift of being able to make complex subjects comprehensible," said Spencer Howard, construction management graduate student. Lee has been part of the College of Technology for six consecutive years, contributing immensely with multiple research initiatives to improve the construction management program. Lee believes his teaching philosophy is based on three fundamental principles: students each bring different perspectives, students should learn real-world problem solving, and a positive attitude and encouragement from instructors can have a big impact on students’ confidence and performance. "He is extremely positive and challenges us to work outside the box. Simply put, Dr. Lee makes learning fun! He integrates real-world problems and analogies that help us put the puzzle together with a great laugh," said Jay Kulkarni, former president of Students in Construction Related Industries (SCRI) and Sigma Lambda Chi. For his achievement Lee received a $5,000 check and a trophy from the university. |
