Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology
The College of Technology is currently in the process of introducing a
baccalaureate program in
biotechnology, in collaboration with the College of Natural Sciences and
Mathematics. The introduction of this degree plan is in process for the
fall 2007 semester (pending state approval) and is currently under the auspices of the
Engineering Technology Department.
As the course offerings and programs expand, the plans of the College of
Technology include the possibility of developing of a full Life Sciences Technology department.
Center for Life Sciences Technology
The UH College of Technology is also home to the
Center for Life Sciences Technology. The Center was started in 2005 and received a grant from the
Governor of Texas for enhancing workforce development in life
sciences technology for the state of Texas.
The Center for Life Sciences Technology is concerned with workforce education
and training programs to support the state’s academic research enterprise and
biotech cluster. The Center tracks the biotechnology cluster, identifying
evolving industry education and training needs. It identifies existing academic
resources in life sciences technology that can support workforce demands by
employers involved in academic research and the development, commercialization,
manufacturing, production and distribution of biotechnology products. Pathways
that connect education and training opportunities with commercial and industrial
needs and opportunities are in the process of being mapped and made available
via a state-wide web portal.
