Supervisory Skills for Technology Environments

Student Spotlight - Jarrod Veal

"My classes in Technology Leadership and Supervision have provided me with skills and experiences that are applicable in a day-to-day working environment. I recently had the opportunity of applying what I have learned over the last four years in my major during my internship in the Mayor’s Office Volunteer Initiatives Program. The skills I have attained will be able to support me throughout my working career."

Jarrod Veal, TELS senior and The Mayor’s Office Volunteer Initiatives Program intern, stands in front of a portrait of Sam Houston in Houston City Council Chambers.

Overview

The Technology Leadership and Supervision program focuses on providing individuals with a competitive advantage when moving into leadership and supervisory roles in technology based organizations. The program investigates the rapidly changing and complex nature of leadership in organizations that use and rely on technology on a day to day basis. The TLS degree provides a long term, empowering approach to the practice of leading people rather than the short term, command and control approach to utilizing human resources. Students learn about leadership, the importance of organizational vision and values, developing human resources, and managing technological resources in corporate, government, or community organizations. Leadership skills in goal-setting, time management, verbal and visual communication, and leadership values and abilities are developed through relevant real world applications.
