Once you have attended an on campus orientation meeting, you need to contact the location of your choice directly to arrange for your volunteer interview, paperwork, and scheduling. Please remember that before you do this, you need to attend an on campus orientation and fill out all of the necessary paperwork (the School or Hospital Indemnification Forms and the Join Now Form).
Please Note: Schools and Hospitals require a criminal background check that can take several weeks for processing.

The Central Region of HISD has requested UH Cougars for Kids Mentors at the following schools:

How to Register as a Volunteer (2 Easy Steps):
1. Register as a volunteer via the HISD Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) program by going online at www.houstonisd.org. Look for the "Community" section on the home page, scroll down and click on "VIPS Login" to register. Where it asks for affiliation, please type in Cougars for Kids.
2. Scan and send a copy of your driver's license to Tina Thompson (VIPS Coordinator) at tthomps3@houstonisd.org for the criminal history background check. This process takes about 10 days. Please check with Dr. Samples (contact information below) to see if you have cleared.

Pasadena ISD (PISD)
Helping Future Lil' Coogs
HOSTS (Helping One Student to Succeed) is designed to help elementary students with reading while building relationships that have long-lasting impact on their lives. Mentoring is one of the best investments you can make for their future.

Fort Bend ISD
The Fort Bend ISD has requested UH Cougars for Kids Mentors district wide:
Fort Bend ISD is recruiting volunteer mentors to meet with students from all grade levels, for 30 minutes to one hour each week. Georgia Hicks, FBISD School Counselor said, ‘You can't feed a kid academics when he's choking on emotions!' Mentors help students realize that they matter while gaining a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment from this experience. Volunteers who have a desire to help students be successful and reach their full potential in the classroom must attend a one hour training and complete a criminal history background check. You can make a difference in the future of a student!

The Cypress-Fairbanks ISD has requested UH Cougars for Kids Mentors for mentors and tutors:
A mentor is a suitable role model committed to serve as a guide and a friend while helping a student with his/her educational and personal development. We ask for a commitment of thirty minutes to one hour a week for the school year. You will meet only on campus & during school hours. Appointment times may be flexible.
The VIPS TAG Team is a group of dedicated volunteers who are committed to working directly with students to help them reach their full academic potential. This team, in conjunction with curriculum coordinators and helping teachers, gives personalized attention to students who need extra help.
A two hour training and criminal background check is required. Join the Cy-Fair ISD team and make a make a positive impact in the lives of our youth.

Volunteers who are interested in making a positive impact on a child's life must attend a two-hour training session, "How to Be a Successful Student Mentor."

Alief ISD
The Alief Independent School District has requested UH Cougars for Kids district wide as tutors and mentors:
Volunteer tutors are needed for all grade levels and for all subject areas. Volunteer mentors are needed for all grade levels and are asked to make a commitment of 30 minutes to one hour each week to meet with their assigned students. Meetings are held on campus only and during normal school hours. All volunteers must clear a criminal background check, and mentors must attend a one-hour training.

The Katy Independent School District has requested UH Cougars for Kids mentors and volunteers.
KEYS (Keep Encouraging youth Toward Success) mentors work one-on-one with children on the brink of success. The program is available at all campuses, kindergarten through 12th grade, and asks that mentors make a one-year, one-hour-per week commitment to their student.

Short term projects (Episodic volunteers)
· Employee Wellness Screening Fair
Volunteers are needed to assist in open enrollment biometric health screening fairs. Volunteers will assist patients in signing consent forms and directing patients throughout the health screening. Volunteers are needed to fill partial or full shifts. Busiest times are from 10:30 – 1:30 pm.
Timeframes: Wednesday, November 3, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Friday, November 12, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm

Long term assignments
· Research Institute – Information Desk
Do you like to tell people where to go?
Volunteers are needed to direct traffic in our brand new research facility. There will be major international conventions held in this location so there will be times that are busier than usual. This desk is not the busiest desk in the hospital so this assignment may be perfect for student who would like to have the opportunity to study during slow times.
Time frames: Any 3 or more hour shift, any weekday between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm
· Navigator
Do you have a talent for finding your way around? This position is for the volunteer who just can’t sit still!
Navigator volunteers are stationed throughout the hospital to assist patients and/or visitors in navigating their way through the hospital.
Time frames: Any 3 or more hour shift, any weekday between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm
· Family Room
Are looking for a learning experience?
Support our patients friends and families as they wait for their loved ones. Serve as a liaison for these visitors. This is a great opportunity to give back while you learn about the hospital environment.
Time frames: Any 3 or more hour shift, any weekday between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm
· Music Volunteer (especially piano)
Do you play a musical instrument? Come visit our patients and/or family rooms to provide a much needed healing diversion. And if you qualify, you may even be invited to play the piano in one of our lobbies. Our patients love our musical volunteers.

· Administrative Support
Great way to keep your resume fresh!
CIS Education, the Employee Health Clinic and our Social Work Department are all looking for volunteers who assist them with basic clerical duties.
Time frames: Any 3 or more hour shift, any weekday between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm
· Cancer Center – Caring Companion Calls
Do you excel at customer service?
The Cancer Center needs volunteers to make follow up calls to former patients. The purpose of this assignment is to retrieve valuable data for cancer research.
Time frames: Any 3 or more hour shift, any weekday between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm or Saturdays between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm
· Emergency Department – Caring Companion Calls
The Emergency Department needs volunteers to make follow up calls to patients who recently visited the Emergency department.
Time frames: Any 3 or more hour shift, any weekday between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm
· Emergency Department – Patient Access Services
The Emergency Department needs volunteers to communicate with family members on where their loved ones are and make admission packets.
